Prophetia Sophoniae

Væ provocatrix, et redempta civitas, columba!

Woe to the provoking and redeemed city, the dove.

Vae provocatrice, et redime civitate, columba!

non audivit vocem, et non suscepit disciplinam; in Domino non est confisa, ad Deum suum non appropinquavit.

She hath not hearkened to the voice, neither hath she received discipline: she hath not trusted in the Lord, she drew not near to her God.

Non audi voce, et non suscipe disciplina; in Domino non es confide, ad Deo suo non appropinqua.

Principes ejus in medio ejus quasi leones rugientes; judices ejus lupi vespere, non relinquebant in mane.

Her princes are in the midst of her as roaring lions: her judges are evening wolves, they left nothing for the morning.

Principes de illo in medio de illo quasi leones rugie; iudices de illo lupo vespere, non relinque in mane.

Prophetæ ejus vesani, viri infideles; sacerdotes ejus polluerunt sanctum, injuste egerunt contra legem.

Her prophets are senseless, men without faith: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have acted unjustly against the law.

Prophetas de illo vesano, viros infidele; sacerdotes de illo pollue sancto, iniuste age contra lege.

Dominus justus in medio ejus non faciet iniquitatem; mane, mane judicium suum dabit in lucem, et non abscondetur; nescivit autem iniquus confusionem.

The just Lord is in the midst thereof, he will not do iniquity: in the morning, in the morning he will bring his judgment to light, and it shall not be hid: but the wicked man hath not known shame.

Domino iusto in medio de illo non i fac iniquitate; mane, mane iudicio suo i da in luce, et non absconde; iniquo autem ne sci confusione.

Disperdidi gentes, et dissipati sunt anguli earum; desertas feci vias eorum, dum non est qui transeat; desolatæ sunt civitates eorum, non remanente viro, neque ullo habitatore.

I have destroyed the nations, and their towers are beaten down: I have made their ways desert, so that there is none that passeth by: their cities are desolate, there is not a man remaining, nor any inhabitant.

Disperdoses gentes, et dissipa es angulos de illas; desiri fac vias de illos, dum non es qui transi; desola es civitates de illos, non remane viro, neque ullo habitatore.

Dixi: Attamen timebis me, suscipies disciplinam; et non peribit habitaculum ejus, propter omnia in quibus visitavi eam: verumtamen diluculo surgentes corruperunt omnes cogitationes suas.

I said: Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive correction: and her dwelling shall not perish, for all things wherein I have visited her: but they rose early, and corrupted all their thoughts.

Fixe: attame time me, suscipe disciplina; et non habitaculo de illo peri, propter omni in que visita illa: verumtamen diluculo surge corrumpe omni cogitationes suo.

Quapropter exspecta me, dicit Dominus, in die resurrectionis meæ in futurum: quia judicium meum ut congregem gentes, et colligam regna, et effundam super eos indignationem meam, omnem iram furoris mei: in igne enim zeli mei devorabitur omnis terra.

Wherefore expect me, saith the Lord, in the day of my resurrection that is to come, for my judgment is to assemble the Gentiles, and to gather the kingdoms: and to pour upon them my indignation, all my fierce anger: for with the fire of my jealousy shall all the earth be devoured.

Quapropter expecta me, Domino dic, in die de resurrectione meo in es: quia iudicio meo ut congrega gentes, et collige regnos, et effunde super illos indignatione meo, omni ira de furore meo: in igni nam de zelo meo omni terra devora.

Quia tunc reddam populis labium electum, ut invocent omnes in nomine Domini, et serviant ei humero uno.

Because then I will restore to the people a chosen lip, that all may call upon the name of the Lord, and may serve him with one shoulder.

Quia tunc redde ad populos labio elige, ut invoca omni in nomine de Domino, et servi ad illo ad humero uno.

Ultra flumina Æthiopiæ, inde supplices mei; filii dispersorum meorum deferent munus mihi.

From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia, shall my suppliants, the children of my dispersed people, bring me an offering.

Ultra flumines de Aethiopia, inde supplice meo; filios disperge meo defer munere ad me.

In die illa non confunderis super cunctis adinventionibus tuis, quibus prævaricata es in me, quia tunc auferam de medio tui magniloquos superbiæ tuæ, et non adjicies exaltari amplius in monte sancto meo.

In that day thou shalt not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me for then I will take away out of the midst of thee thy proud boasters, and thou shalt no more be lifted up because of my holy mountain.

In die illa non confunde super cuncta adinventiones tuo, ad que praevaricor es in me, quia tunc aufer de medio tuo magniloquo de superbia tuo, et non adicie exalta ample in monte sancto meo.

Et derelinquam in medio tui populum pauperem et egenum: et sperabunt in nomine Domini.

And I will leave in the midst of thee a poor and needy people: and they shall hope in the name of the Lord.

Et derelinque in medio tuo populo paupere et egeno: et spera in nomine de Domino.

Reliquiæ Israël non facient iniquitatem, nec loquentur mendacium, et non invenietur in ore eorum lingua dolosa, quoniam ipsi pascentur, et accubabunt, et non erit qui exterreat.

The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies, nor shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed, and shall lie down, and there shall be none to make them afraid.

Reliquias Israële non fac iniquitate, nec loque mendacio, et non lingua in ore de illos dolosa inveni, quia ipso pasce, et accuba, et non qui exterre es.

Lauda, filia Sion; jubila, Israël: lætare, et exsulta in omni corde, filia Jerusalem.

Give praise, O daughter of Sion: shout, O Israel: be glad, and rejoice with all thy heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.

Lauda, filia Sione; iubilo, Israële: laetor, et exsulta in omni corde, filia Ierusalem.

Abstulit Dominus judicium tuum; avertit inimicos tuos. Rex Israël Dominus in medio tui: non timebis malum ultra.

The Lord hath taken away thy judgment, he hath turned away thy enemies: the king of Israel, the Lord, is in the midst of thee, thou shalt fear evil no more.

Domino ad-fer iudicio tuo; averte inimicos tuo. Rege Israële Domino in medio tuo: non time malo ultra.

In die illa dicetur Jerusalem: Noli timere; Sion: Non dissolvantur manus tuæ.

In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Fear not: to Sion: Let not thy hands be weakened.

In die illa dic Ierusalem: ne vol time; sione: non manus tuo dissolve.

Dominus Deus tuus in medio tui fortis, ipse salvabit: gaudebit super te in lætitia, silebit in dilectione sua, exsultabit super te in laude.

The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty, he will save: he will rejoice over thee with gladness, he will be silent in his love, he will be joyful over thee in praise.

Domino Deo tuo in medio tuo forti, ipso salva: gaude super te in laetitia, sile in dilectione suo, exsulta super te in laude.

Nugas, qui a lege recesserant, congregabo, quia ex te erant: ut non ultra habeas super eis opprobrium.

The triflers that were departed from the law, I will gather together, because they were of thee: that thou mayest no more suffer reproach for them.

Nugas, qui ab lege recede, congrega, quia ex te es: ut non ultra habe super illos opprobrio.

Ecce ego interficiam omnes qui afflixerunt te in tempore illo: et salvabo claudicantem, et eam quæ ejecta fuerat congregabo: et ponam eos in laudem, et in nomen, in omni terra confusionis eorum,

Behold I will cut off all that have afflicted thee at that time: and I will save her that halteth, and will gather her that was cast out: and I will get them praise, and a name, in all the land where they had been put to confusion.

Ecce me interfice omni qui afflige te in tempore illo: et salva claudica, et illa que eicie es congrega: et pone illos in laude, et in nomine, in omni terra de confusione de illos,

in tempore illo quo adducam vos, et in tempore quo congregabo vos. Dabo enim vos in nomen, et in laudem omnibus populis terræ, cum convertero captivitatem vestram coram oculis vestris, dicit Dominus.

At that time, when I will bring you: and at the time that I will gather you: for I will give you a name, and praise among all the people of the earth, when I shall have brought back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord.

In tempore illo quo adduce vos, et in tempore quo congrega vos. Daba nam vos in nomine, et in laude ad omni ad populos de terra, cum converte captivitate vestro coram oculos vestro, Domino dic.
