Evangelium secundum Matthaeum

In illo tempore audivit Herodes tetrarcha famam Jesu:

At that time Herod the Tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus.

In illo tempore Herode tetrarche audi fama de Iesu:

et ait pueris suis: Hic est Joannes Baptista: ipse surrexit a mortuis, et ideo virtutes operantur in eo.

And he said to his servants: This is John the Baptist: he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him.

Et dic ad pueros suo: hoc es Ioanne Baptista: ipso surge ab mortuo, et ideo virtutes operor in eo.

Herodes enim tenuit Joannem, et alligavit eum: et posuit in carcerem propter Herodiadem uxorem fratris sui.

For Herod had apprehended John and bound him, and put him into prison, because of Herodias, his brother's wife.

Herode nam tene Ioanne, et alliga illo: et pone in carcere propter Herodiade uxore de fratre suo.

Dicebat enim illi Joannes: Non licet tibi habere eam.

For John said to him: It is not lawful for thee to have her.

Ioanne nam ad illo dic: non lice ad te habere illa.

Et volens illum occidere, timuit populum: quia sicut prophetam eum habebant.

And having a mind to put him to death, he feared the people: because they esteemed him as a prophet.

Et volente illo occide, time populo: quia sicut propheta illo habe.

Die autem natalis Herodis saltavit filia Herodiadis in medio, et placuit Herodi:

But on Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them: and pleased Herod.

Die autem de natale de Herode filia de Herodiade salta in medio, et place ad Herode:

unde cum juramento pollicitus est ei dare quodcumque postulasset ab eo.

Whereupon he promised with an oath, to give her whatsoever she would ask of him.

Unde cum iuramento polliceor es ad illo dare omni postula ab eo.

At illa præmonita a matre sua: Da mihi, inquit, hic in disco caput Joannis Baptistæ.

But she being instructed before by her mother, said: Give me here in a dish the head of John the Baptist.

Sed illa praemone ab matre suo: da ad me, dic, hoc in disco capite de Ioanne de Baptista.

Et contristatus est rex: propter juramentum autem, et eos qui pariter recumbebant, jussit dari.

And the king was struck sad: yet because of his oath, and for them that sat with him at table, he commanded it to be given.

Et contrista es rege: propter iuramento autem, et illos qui pariter recumbe, iube da.

Misitque et decollavit Joannem in carcere.

And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

Et mitte et decolla Ioanne in carcere.

Et allatum est caput ejus in disco, et datum est puellæ, et attulit matri suæ.

And his head was brought in a dish: and it was given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother.

Et ad-fer es capite de illo in disco, et dato es de puella, et ad-fer ad matre suo.

Et accedentes discipuli ejus, tulerunt corpus ejus, et sepelierunt illud: et venientes nuntiaverunt Jesu.

And his disciples came and took the body, and buried it, and came and told Jesus.

Et accede discipulos de illo, fer corpore de illo, et sepeli illo: et veni nuntia ad Iesu.

Quod cum audisset Jesus, secessit inde in navicula, in locum desertum seorsum: et cum audissent turbæ, secutæ sunt eum pedestres de civitatibus.

Which when Jesus had heard, he retired from thence by a boat, into a desert place apart, and the multitudes having heard of it, followed him on foot out of the cities.

Iesu cum audi quod, secede inde in navicula, in loco deserto s(e)orsum: et cum turbas audi, seque es illo pedestre de civitates.

Et exiens vidit turbam multam, et misertus est eis, et curavit languidos eorum.

And he coming forth saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

Et exi vide turba multo, et misereor es ad illos, et cura languido de illos.

Vespere autem facto, accesserunt ad eum discipuli ejus, dicentes: Desertus est locus, et hora jam præteriit: dimitte turbas, ut euntes in castella, emant sibi escas.

And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying: This is a desert place, and the hour is now passed: send away the multitudes, that going into the towns, they may buy themselves victuals.

Vespere autem fac, discipulos ad illo de illo accede, dicente: desere es loco, et hora jam praeteri: remitte turbas, ut iente in castellos, eme ad se escas.

Jesus autem dixit eis: Non habent necesse ire: date illis vos manducare.

But Jesus said to them, They have no need to go: give you them to eat.

Iesu autem dic ad illos: non habe necesse i: da ad illos vos manduca.

Responderunt ei: Non habemus hic nisi quinque panes et duos pisces.

They answered him: We have not here, but five loaves, and two fishes.

Responde ad illo: non habe hoc nisi quinque pane et duo pisce.

Qui ait eis: Afferte mihi illos huc.

Who said to them: Bring them hither to me.

Qui dic ad illos: ad-fer ad me illos huc.

Et cum jussisset turbam discumbere super fœnum, acceptis quinque panibus et duobus piscibus, aspiciens in cælum benedixit, et fregit, et dedit discipulis panes, discipuli autem turbis.

And when he had commanded the multitude to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.

Et cum iube turba discumbe super foeno, accipe quinque pane et duo pisce, aspice in caelo benedic, et frange, et da ad discipulos panes, discipulos autem turbas.

Et manducaverunt omnes, et saturati sunt. Et tulerunt reliquias, duodecim cophinos fragmentorum plenos.

And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up what remained, twelve full baskets of fragments.

Et omni manduca, et satura es. Et fer reliquias, duodecime cophinos de fragmentos plena.

Manducantium autem fuit numerus quinque millia virorum, exceptis mulieribus et parvulis.

And the number of them that did eat, was five thousand men, besides women and children.

Manduca autem es numero quinque mile de viros, excipe mulieres et parvulo.

Et statim compulit Jesus discipulos ascendere in naviculam, et præcedere eum trans fretum, donec dimitteret turbas.

And forthwith Jesus obliged his disciples to go up into the boat, and to go before him over the water, till he dismissed the people.

Et statim Iesu compella discipulos ascende in navicula, et praecede illo trans freto, usque que dimitte turbas.

Et dimissa turba, ascendit in montem solus orare. Vespere autem facto solus erat ibi:

And having dismissed the multitude, he went into a mountain alone to pray. And when it was evening, he was there alone.

Et dimitte turba, ascende in monte solo ora. Vespere autem fac solo es ibi:

navicula autem in medio mari jactabatur fluctibus: erat enim contrarius ventus.

But the boat in the midst of the sea was tossed with the waves: for the wind was contrary.

Navicula autem in medio mari iacta fluctus: es nam contrario vento.

Quarta enim vigilia noctis, venit ad eos ambulans super mare.

And in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them walking upon the sea.

Quarto nam vigilia de nocte, veni ad illos ambulante super mari.

Et videntes eum super mare ambulantem, turbati sunt, dicentes: Quia phantasma est. Et præ timore clamaverunt.

And they seeing him walking upon the sea, were troubled, saying: It is an apparition. And they cried out for fear.

Et vide illo super mari ambula, turba es, dicente: quia phantasmate es. Et prae timore clama.

Statimque Jesus locutus est eis, dicens: Habete fiduciam: ego sum, nolite timere.

And immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying: Be of good heart: it is I, fear ye not.

Et statim Iesu locuto es ad illos, dicente: habe fiducia: me es, ne vol time.

Respondens autem Petrus, dixit: Domine, si tu es, jube me ad te venire super aquas.

And Peter making answer, said: Lord, if it be thou, bid me come to thee upon the waters.

Respondente autem Petro, dic: domino, si te es, iube me ad te venire super aquas.

At ipse ait: Veni. Et descendens Petrus de navicula, ambulabat super aquam ut veniret ad Jesum.

And he said: Come. And Peter going down out of the boat walked upon the water to come to Jesus.

Sed ipso dic: venie. Et descende Petro de navicula, ambula super aqua ut veni ad Iesu.

Videns vero ventum validum, timuit: et cum cœpisset mergi, clamavit dicens: Domine, salvum me fac.

But seeing the wind strong, he was afraid: and when he began to sink, he cried out, saying: Lord, save me.

Vidente vero veni valida, time: et cum incipe merge, clama dicente: domino, salva me fac.

Et continuo Jesus extendens manum, apprehendit eum: et ait illi: Modicæ fidei, quare dubitasti?

And immediately Jesus stretching forth his hand took hold of him, and said to him: O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?

Et continuo Iesu extende manu, apprehende illo: et dic ad illo: modico de fide, quare dubita?

Et cum ascendissent in naviculam, cessavit ventus.

And when they were come up into the boat, the wind ceased.

Et cum ascende in navicula, vento cessa.

Qui autem in navicula erant, venerunt, et adoraverunt eum, dicentes: Vere Filius Dei es.

And they that were in the boat came and adored him, saying: Indeed thou art the Son of God.

Qui autem in navicula es, veni, et adora illo, dicente: vere Filio de Deo es.

Et cum transfretassent, venerunt in terram Genesar.

And having passed the water, they came into the country of Genesar.

Et cum transfreta, veni in terra Genesare.

Et cum cognovissent eum viri loci illius, miserunt in universam regionem illam, et obtulerunt ei omnes male habentes:

And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent into all that country, and brought to him all that were diseased.

Et cum viros de loco de illo cognosce illo, mitte in universa regione illa, et offer ad illo omni male habe:

et rogabant eum ut vel fimbriam vestimenti ejus tangerent. Et quicumque tetigerunt, salvi facti sunt.

And they besought him that they might touch but the hem of his garment. And as many as touched, were made whole.

Et roga illo ut vel fimbria de vestimento de illo tange. Et omni tange, salva fac es.
