Evangelium secundum Matthaeum

Mane autem facto, consilium inierunt omnes principes sacerdotum et seniores populi adversus Jesum, ut eum morti traderent.

And when morning was come, all the chief priests and ancients of the people took counsel against Jesus, that they might put him to death.

Mane autem fac, omni principes de sacerdotes et sene de populo intra consilio contra Iesu, ut illo ad morte trade.

Et vinctum adduxerunt eum, et tradiderunt Pontio Pilato præsidi.

And they brought him bound and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

Et vince adduce illo, et trade ad Pontio ad Pilato ad praeside.

Tunc videns Judas, qui eum tradidit, quod damnatus esset, pœnitentia ductus, retulit triginta argenteos principibus sacerdotum, et senioribus,

Then Judas, who betrayed him, seeing that he was condemned, repenting himself, brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and ancients,

Tunc vidente Iudase, qui trade illo, quod damna es, poenitentia ducto, refer triginta argenteo ad principes de sacerdotes, et ad sene,

dicens: Peccavi, tradens sanguinem justum. At illi dixerunt: Quid ad nos? tu videris.

Saying: I have sinned in betraying innocent blood. But they said: What is that to us? Look thou to it.

Dicente: pecca, trade sanguine iusto. Sed ad illo dic: quid ad nos? Te vide.

Et projectis argenteis in templo, recessit: et abiens laqueo se suspendit.

And casting down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed and went and hanged himself with an halter.

Et proicie argenteo in templo, recede: et i ab laqueo se suspende.

Principes autem sacerdotum, acceptis argenteis, dixerunt: Non licet eos mittere in corbonam: quia pretium sanguinis est.

But the chief priests having taken the pieces of silver, said: It is not lawful to put them into the corbona, because it is the price of blood.

Principes autem de sacerdotes, accipe argenteo, dic: non lice illos mitte in corbona: quia pretio de sanguine es.

Consilio autem inito, emerunt ex illis agrum figuli, in sepulturam peregrinorum.

And after they had consulted together, they bought with them the potter's field, to be a burying place for strangers.

Consilio autem intra, eme ex illos agro de figulo, in sepultura de peregrinos.

Propter hoc vocatus est ager ille, Haceldama, hoc est, Ager sanguinis, usque in hodiernum diem.

For this cause that field was called Haceldama, that is, the field of blood, even to this day.

Propter hoc vocato es agro illo, Haceldama, hoc es, Agro de sanguine, usque in hodierna die.

Tunc impletum est quod dictum est per Jeremiam prophetam, dicentem: Et acceperunt triginta argenteos pretium appretiati, quem appretiaverunt a filiis Israël:

Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremias the prophet, saying: And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was prized, whom they prized of the children of Israel.

Tunc imple es quod dicto es per Ieremia propheta, dic: et accipe triginta argenteo pretio appretia, quem appretia ab filios Israële:

et dederunt eos in agrum figuli, sicut constituit mihi Dominus.

And they gave them unto the potter's field, as the Lord appointed to me.

Et da illos in agro de figulo, sicut Domino ad me constitue.

Jesus autem stetit ante præsidem, et interrogavit eum præses, dicens: Tu es rex Judæorum? Dicit illi Jesus: Tu dicis.

And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, saying: Art thou the king of the Jews? Jesus saith to him: Thou sayest it.

Iesu autem sta ante praeside, et praeside interroga illo, dicente: te es rege de Iudaeos? Iesu ad illo dic: te dic.

Et cum accusaretur a principibus sacerdotum et senioribus, nihil respondit.

And when he was accused by the chief priests and ancients, he answered nothing.

Et cum accusa ab principes de sacerdotes et sene, nihil responde.

Tunc dicit illi Pilatus: Non audis quanta adversum te dicunt testimonia?

Then Pilate saith to him: Dost not thou hear how great testimonies they allege against thee?

Tunc Pilato ad illo dic: non audi testimonios contra te dic quanto?

Et non respondit ei ad ullum verbum, ita ut miraretur præses vehementer.

And he answered him to never a word, so that the governor wondered exceedingly.

Et non responde ad illo ad ullo verbo, ita ut praeside miror vehementer.

Per diem autem solemnem consueverat præses populo dimittere unum vinctum, quem voluissent:

Now upon the solemn day the governor was accustomed to release to the people one prisoner, whom they would.

Per die autem solvemne praeside consuesce ad populo dimitte uno vince, quem vol:

habebat autem tunc vinctum insignem, qui dicebatur Barabbas.

And he had then a notorious prisoner that was called Barabbas.

Habe autem tunc vince insigni, qui dic Barabbase.

Congregatis ergo illis, dixit Pilatus: Quem vultis dimittam vobis: Barabbam, an Jesum, qui dicitur Christus?

They therefore being gathered together, Pilate said: Whom will you that I release to You: Barabbas, or Jesus that is called Christ?

Congrega ergo ad illos, Pilato dic: quem vol dimitte ad vos: barabbase, an Iesu, qui dic Christo?

Sciebat enim quod per invidiam tradidissent eum.

For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

Sci nam quod per invidia trade illo.

Sedente autem illo pro tribunali, misit ad eum uxor ejus, dicens: Nihil tibi, et justo illi: multa enim passa sum hodie per visum propter eum.

And as he was sitting in the place of judgment, his wife sent to him, saying: Have thou nothing to do with that just man; for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.

Sede autem illo pro tribunali, uxore ad illo de illo mitte, dicente: nihil ad te, et ad iusto illo: multo nam pate es hodie per viso propter illo.

Principes autem sacerdotum et seniores persuaserunt populis ut peterent Barabbam, Jesum vero perderent.

But the chief priests and ancients persuaded the people that they should ask Barabbas and make Jesus away.

Principes autem de sacerdotes et sene persuade ad populos ut pete Barabbase, Iesu vero perde.

Respondens autem præses, ait illis: Quem vultis vobis de duobus dimitti? At illi dixerunt: Barabbam.

And the governor answering, said to them: Whether will you of the two to be released unto you? But they said: Barabbas.

Respondente autem praeside, dic ad illos: quem vol ad vos de duo dimitte? Sed illo dic: barabbase.

Dicit illis Pilatus: Quid igitur faciam de Jesu, qui dicitur Christus?

Pilate saith to them: What shall I do then with Jesus that is called Christ? They say all: Let him be crucified.

Pilato ad illos dic: quid ergo fac de Iesu, qui dic Christo?

Dicunt omnes: Crucifigatur. Ait illis præses: Quid enim mali fecit? At illi magis clamabant dicentes: Crucifigatur.

The governor said to them: Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying: Let him be crucified.

Omni dic: crucifige. Praeside ad illos dic: quid nam de malo fac? Sed illo magis clama dicente: crucifige.

Videns autem Pilatus quia nihil proficeret, sed magis tumultus fieret: accepta aqua, lavit manus coram populo, dicens: Innocens ego sum a sanguine justi hujus: vos videritis.

And Pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, taking water washed his hands before the people, saying: I am innocent of the blood of this just man. Look you to it.

Vidente autem Pilato quia nihil profice, sed magis tumultu fi: accipe aqua, lava manus coram populo, dicente: innocente me es ab sanguine de iusto de hoc: vos vide.

Et respondens universus populus, dixit: Sanguis ejus super nos, et super filios nostros.

And the whole people answering, said: His blood be upon us and upon our children.

Et respondente universa populo, dic: sanguine de illo super nos, et super filios nostro.

Tunc dimisit illis Barabbam: Jesum autem flagellatum tradidit eis ut crucifigeretur.

Then he released to them Barabbas: and having scourged Jesus, delivered him unto them to be crucified.

Tunc remitte ad illos Barabbase: iesu autem flagella trade ad illos ut crucifige.

Tunc milites præsidis suscipientes Jesum in prætorium, congregaverunt ad eum universam cohortem:

Then the soldiers of the governor, taking Jesus into the hall, gathered together unto him the whole band.

Tunc milites de praeside suscipe Iesu in praetorio, congrega ad illo universa cohorte:

et exuentes eum, chlamydem coccineam circumdederunt ei,

And stripping him, they put a scarlet cloak about him.

Et exue illo, chlamyde coccinea circumda ad illo,

et plectentes coronam de spinis, posuerunt super caput ejus, et arundinem in dextera ejus. Et genu flexo ante eum, illudebant ei, dicentes: Ave rex Judæorum.

And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand. And bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying: Hail, King of the Jews.

Et plecte corona de spinas, pone super capite de illo, et arundine in dextera de illo. Et genu flecte ante illo, illude ad illo, dicente: ave rege de Iudaeos.

Et exspuentes in eum, acceperunt arundinem, et percutiebant caput ejus.

And spitting upon him, they took the reed and struck his head.

Et exspue in illo, accipe arundine, et percute capite de illo.

Et postquam illuserunt ei, exuerunt eum chlamyde, et induerunt eum vestimentis ejus, et duxerunt eum ut crucifigerent.

And after they had mocked him, they took off the cloak from him and put on him his own garments and led him away to crucify him.

Et postquam illude ad illo, exue illo chlamyde, et indue illo vestimentos de illo, et duc illo ut crucifige.

Exeuntes autem invenerunt hominem Cyrenæum, nomine Simonem: hunc angariaverunt ut tolleret crucem ejus.

And going out, they found a man of Cyrene, named Simon: him they forced to take up his cross.

Exi autem inveni homine Cyrenaeo, nomine Simone: hoc angaria ut tolle cruce de illo.

Et venerunt in locum qui dicitur Golgotha, quod est Calvariæ locus.

And they came to the place that is called Golgotha, which is the place of Calvary.

Et veni in loco qui dic Golgotha, quod es de Calvaria loco.

Et dederunt ei vinum bibere cum felle mistum. Et cum gustasset, noluit bibere.

And they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall. And when he had tasted, he would not drink.

Et da ad illo vino bibe cum felle misce. Et cum gusta, ne vol bibe.

Postquam autem crucifixerunt eum, diviserunt vestimenta ejus, sortem mittentes: ut impleretur quod dictum est per prophetam dicentem: Diviserunt sibi vestimenta mea, et super vestem meam miserunt sortem.

And after they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: They divided my garments among them; and upon my vesture they cast lots.

Postquam autem crucifige illo, divide vestimentos de illo, sorte mitte: ut quod dicto es per propheta dic imple: divide ad se vestimentos meo, et super veste meo mitte sorte.

Et sedentes servabant eum.

And they sat and watched him.

Et sede serva illo.

Et imposuerunt super caput ejus causam ipsius scriptam: Hic est Jesus rex Judæorum.

And they put over his head his cause written: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Et impone super capite de illo causa de ipso scribe: hoc es Iesu rege de Iudaeos.

Tunc crucifixi sunt cum eo duo latrones: unus a dextris, et unus a sinistris.

Then were crucified with him two thieves: one on the right hand and one on the left.

Tunc crucifige es cum eo duo latro: uno ab dextro, et uno ab sinistro.

Prætereuntes autem blasphemabant eum moventes capita sua,

And they that passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads,

Praeteri autem blasphema illo move capites suo,

et dicentes: Vah! qui destruis templum Dei, et in triduo illud reædificas: salva temetipsum: si Filius Dei es, descende de cruce.

And saying: Vah, thou that destroyest the temple of God and in three days dost rebuild it: save thy own self. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

Et dicente: vah! Qui destrue templo de Deo, et in triduo illo reaedifica: salva temetipesca: si Filio de Deo es, descende de cruce.

Similiter et principes sacerdotum illudentes cum scribis et senioribus dicebant:

In like manner also the chief priests, with the scribes and ancients, mocking said:

Similiter et principes de sacerdotes illude cum scribas et sene dic:

Alios salvos fecit, seipsum non potest salvum facere: si rex Israël est, descendat nunc de cruce, et credimus ei:

He saved others: himself he cannot save. If he be the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross: and we will believe him.

Alio salva fac, seipso non pote salva facere: si rege Israële es, descende nunc de cruce, et crede ad illo:

confidit in Deo: liberet nunc, si vult eum: dixit enim: Quia Filius Dei sum.

He trusted in God: let him now deliver him if he will have him. For he said: I am the Son of God.

Confide in Deo: libera nunc, si vol illo: dic nam: quia Filio de Deo es.

Idipsum autem et latrones, qui crucifixi erant cum eo, improperabant ei.

And the selfsame thing the thieves also that were crucified with him reproached him with.

Idipso autem et latros, qui crucifige es cum eo, impropera ad illo.

A sexta autem hora tenebræ factæ sunt super universam terram usque ad horam nonam.

Now from the sixth hour, there was darkness over the whole earth, until the ninth hour.

Ab sexto autem hora tenebras fac es super universa terra usque ad hora nono.

Et circa horam nonam clamavit Jesus voce magna, dicens: Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani? hoc est: Deus meus, Deus meus, ut quid dereliquisti me?

And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying: Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani? That is, My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?

Et circa hora nono clama Iesu voce magna, dicente: eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani? Hoc es: deo meo, Deo meo, ut quid derelinque me?

Quidam autem illic stantes, et audientes, dicebant: Eliam vocat iste.

And some that stood there and heard said: This man calleth Elias.

Uno autem ibi sta, et audi, dic: eliase isto voca.

Et continuo currens unus ex eis, acceptam spongiam implevit aceto, et imposuit arundini, et dabat ei bibere.

And immediately one of them running took a sponge and filled it with vinegar and put it on a reed and gave him to drink.

Et continuo curre uno ex illos, accipe spongia imple aceto, et impone ad arundine, et da ad illo bibe.

Ceteri vero dicebant: Sine, videamus an veniat Elias liberans eum.

And the others said: Let be. Let us see whether Elias will come to deliver him.

Cetero vero dic: sine, vide an Eliase que veni libera illo.

Jesus autem iterum clamans voce magna, emisit spiritum.

And Jesus again crying with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

Iesu autem iterum clamante voce magna, emitte spiritu.

Et ecce velum templi scissum est in duas partes a summo usque deorsum: et terra mota est, et petræ scissæ sunt,

And behold the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top even to the bottom: and the earth quaked and the rocks were rent.

Et ecce velo de templo scinde es in duo parte ab summo usque deorsum: et terra move es, et petras scinde es,

et monumenta aperta sunt: et multa corpora sanctorum, qui dormierant, surrexerunt.

And the graves were opened: and many bodies of the saints that had slept arose,

Et monumentos aperi es: et multo corpores sancto, qui dormi, surge.

Et exeuntes de monumentis post resurrectionem ejus, venerunt in sanctam civitatem, et apparuerunt multis.

And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, came into the holy city and appeared to many.

Et exi de monumentos post resurrectione de illo, veni in sancto civitate, et appare ad multo.

Centurio autem, et qui cum eo erant, custodientes Jesum, viso terræmotu, et his quæ fiebant, timuerunt valde, dicentes: Vere Filius Dei erat iste.

Now the centurion and they that were with him watching Jesus, having seen the earthquake and the things that were done, were sore afraid, saying: Indeed this was the Son of God.

Centurio autem, et qui cum eo es, custodi Iesu, vide terraemotu, et hoc que fi, time valde, dicente: vere Filio de Deo es isto.

Erant autem ibi mulieres multæ a longe, quæ secutæ erant Jesum a Galilæa, ministrantes ei:

And there were there many women afar off, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:

Es autem ibi mulieres multo ab longe, que seque es Iesu ab Galilaea, ministra ad illo:

inter quas erat Maria Magdalene, et Maria Jacobi, et Joseph mater, et mater filiorum Zebedæi.

Among whom was Mary Magdalen and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Inter que es Maria Magdalene, et Maria de Iacobo, et Ioseph matre, et matre de filios de Zebedaeo.

Cum autem sero factum esset, venit quidam homo dives ab Arimathæa, nomine Joseph, qui et ipse discipulus erat Jesu:

And when it was evening, there came a certain rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was a disciple of Jesus.

Cum autem sere facto es, veni uno homine divite ab Arimathaea, nomine Ioseph, qui et ipso discipulo es de Iesu:

hic accessit ad Pilatum, et petiit corpus Jesu. Tunc Pilatus jussit reddi corpus.

He went to Pilate and asked the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded that the body should be delivered.

Hoc accede ad Pilato, et pete corpore de Iesu. Tunc Pilato iube redde corpore.

Et accepto corpore, Joseph involvit illud in sindone munda,

And Joseph taking the body wrapped it up in a clean linen cloth:

Et accipe corpore, Ioseph involve illo in sindone mundo,

et posuit illud in monumento suo novo, quod exciderat in petra. Et advolvit saxum magnum ad ostium monumenti, et abiit.

And laid it in his own new monument, which he had hewed out in a rock. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the monument and went his way.

Et pone illo in monumento suo novo, quod excide in petra. Et advolve saxo magna ad ostio de monumento, et i ab.

Erant autem ibi Maria Magdalene, et altera Maria, sedentes contra sepulchrum.

And there was there Mary Magdalen and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.

Es autem ibi Maria Magdalene, et altero Maria, sede contra sepulchro.

Altera autem die, quæ est post Parasceven, convenerunt principes sacerdotum et pharisæi ad Pilatum,

And the next day, which followed the day of preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees came together to Pilate,

Altero autem die, que es post Parasceve, principes de sacerdotes et pharisaeos conveni ad Pilato,

dicentes: Domine, recordati sumus, quia seductor ille dixit adhuc vivens: Post tres dies resurgam.

Saying: Sir, we have remembered, that that seducer said, while he was yet alive: After three days I will rise again.

Dicente: domino, recordor es, quia seductore illo dic adhuc vivente: post tre die resurge.

Jube ergo custodiri sepulchrum usque in diem tertium: ne forte veniant discipuli ejus, et furentur eum, et dicant plebi: Surrexit a mortuis: et erit novissimus error pejor priore.

Command therefore the sepulchre to be guarded until the third day: lest perhaps his disciples come and steal him away and say to the people: He is risen from the dead. And the last error shall be worse than the first.

Iube ergo custodi sepulchro usque in die tertio: ne forte discipulos de illo veni, et furore illo, et dic ad plebe: surge ab mortuo: et es novissimo errore malo priore.

Ait illis Pilatus: Habetis custodiam, ite, custodite sicut scitis.

Pilate saith to them: You have a guard. Go, guard it as you know.

Pilato ad illos dic: habe custodia, i, custodi sicut sci.

Illi autem abeuntes, munierunt sepulchrum, signantes lapidem, cum custodibus.

And they departing, made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone and setting guards.

Illo autem i ab, munie sepulchro, signa lapide, cum custodes.
