Evangelium secundum Matthaeum

Et accesserunt ad eum pharisæi et sadducæi tentantes: et rogaverunt eum ut signum de cælo ostenderet eis.

And there came to him the Pharisees and Sadducees tempting: and they asked him to shew them a sign from heaven.

Et pharisaeos ad illo et sadducaeos accede tenta: et roga illo ut signo de caelo ostende ad illos.

At ille respondens, ait illis: Facto vespere dicitis: Serenum erit, rubicundum est enim cælum.

But he answered and said to them: When it is evening, you say, It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.

Sed illo respondente, dic ad illos: fac vespere dic: sereno es, rubicundo es nam caelo.

Et mane: Hodie tempestas, rutilat enim triste cælum.

And in the morning: To day there will be a storm, for the sky is red and lowering. You know then how to discern the face of the sky: and can you not know the signs of the times?

Et mane: hodie tempestate, rutila nam triste caelo.

Faciem ergo cæli dijudicare nostis: signa autem temporum non potestis scire? Generatio mala et adultera signum quærit: et signum non dabitur ei, nisi signum Jonæ prophetæ. Et relictis illis, abiit.

A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign: and a sign shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. And he left them, and went away.

Facie ergo de caelo diiudica nosce: signos autem de tempores non pote scire? Generatione malo et adultera quaere signo: et signo non da ad illo, nisi signo de Ionase de propheta. Et relinque ad illos, i ab.

Et cum venissent discipuli ejus trans fretum, obliti sunt panes accipere.

And when his disciples were come over the water, they had forgotten to take bread.

Et cum discipulos de illo veni trans freto, obliviscor es panes accipe.

Qui dixit illis: Intuemini, et cavete a fermento pharisæorum et sadducæorum.

Who said to them: Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Qui dic ad illos: intueminis, et cave ab fermento de pharisaeos et de sadducaeis.

At illi cogitabant intra se dicentes: Quia panes non accepimus.

But they thought within themselves, saying: Because we have taken no bread.

Sed illo cogita intra se dicente: quia panes non accipe.

Sciens autem Jesus, dixit: Quid cogitatis intra vos modicæ fidei, quia panes non habetis?

And Jesus knowing it, said: Why do you think within yourselves, O ye of little faith, for that you have no bread?

Sciente autem Iesu, dic: quid cogita intra vos modico de fide, quia panes non habe?

Nondum intelligitis, neque recordamini quinque panum in quinque millia hominum, et quot cophinos sumpsistis?

Do you not yet understand, neither do you remember the five loaves among five thousand men, and how many baskets you took up?

Non adhuc intellege, neque recordor quinque de pane in quinque mile de homines, et quot cophinos sume?

neque septem panum in quatuor millia hominum, et quot sportas sumpsistis?

Nor the seven loaves, among four thousand men, and how many baskets you took up?

Neque septeme de pane in quatuore mile de homines, et quot sportas sume?

Quare non intelligitis, quia non de pane dixi vobis: Cavete a fermento pharisæorum et sadducæorum?

Why do you not understand that it was not concerning bread I said to you: Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?

Quare non intellege, quia non de pane dic ad vos: cave ab fermento de pharisaeos et de sadducaeis?

Tunc intellexerunt quia non dixerit cavendum a fermento panum, sed a doctrina pharisæorum et sadducæorum.

Then they understood that he said not that they should beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Tunc intellege quia non dic cave ab fermento de panes, sed ab doctrina de pharisaeos et de sadducaeis.

Venit autem Jesus in partes Cæsareæ Philippi: et interrogabat discipulos suos, dicens: Quem dicunt homines esse Filium hominis?

And Jesus came into the quarters of Cesarea Philippi: and he asked his disciples, saying: Whom do men say that the Son of man is?

Iesu autem veni in partes de Caesarea de Philippo: et interroga discipulos suo, dicente: quem dic homines es Filio de homine?

At illi dixerunt: Alii Joannem Baptistam, alii autem Eliam, alii vero Jeremiam, aut unum ex prophetis.

But they said: Some John the Baptist, and other some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

Sed illo dic: alio Ioanne Baptista, alio autem Eliase, alio vero Ieremia, aut uno ex prophetas.

Dicit illis Jesus: Vos autem, quem me esse dicitis?

Jesus saith to them: But whom do you say that I am?

Dic ad illos Iesu: vos autem, quem me es dic?

Respondens Simon Petrus dixit: Tu es Christus, Filius Dei vivi.

Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God.

Respondente Simone Petro dic: te es Christo, Filio de Deo vivo.

Respondens autem Jesus, dixit ei: Beatus es Simon Bar Jona: quia caro et sanguis non revelavit tibi, sed Pater meus, qui in cælis est.

And Jesus answering said to him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven.

Respondente autem Iesu, dic ad illo: beato es Simone Bare Ionase: quia carne et sanguine non revela ad te, sed Patre meo, qui in caelos es.

Et ego dico tibi, quia tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram ædificabo Ecclesiam meam, et portæ inferi non prævalebunt adversus eam.

And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Et me dic ad te, quia te es Petro, et super hoc petra aedifica Ecclesia meo, et portas de infernos non praevale contra illa.

Et tibi dabo claves regni cælorum. Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in cælis: et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in cælis.

And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.

Et ad te da claves de regno de caelos. Et omni ligo super terra, es ligo et in caelos: et omni solve super terra, es solve et in caelos.

Tunc præcepit discipulis suis ut nemini dicerent quia ipse esset Jesus Christus.

Then he commanded his disciples, that they should tell no one that he was Jesus the Christ.

Tunc praecipie ad discipulos suo ut ad nemine dic quia ipso es Iesu Christo.

Exinde cœpit Jesus ostendere discipulis suis, quia oporteret eum ire Jerosolymam, et multa pati a senioribus, et scribis, et principibus sacerdotum, et occidi, et tertia die resurgere.

From that time Jesus began to shew to his disciples, that he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the ancients and scribes and chief priests, and be put to death, and the third day rise again.

Exinde Iesu incipe ostende ad discipulos suo, quia debe illo i Ierosolyma, et multo pate ab sene, et scribas, et principes de sacerdotes, et occide, et tertio die resurge.

Et assumens eum Petrus, cœpit increpare illum dicens: Absit a te, Domine: non erit tibi hoc.

And Peter taking him, began to rebuke him, saying: Lord, be it far from thee, this shall not be unto thee.

Et assume illo Petro, incipe increpa illo dicente: abes ab te, Domino: non hoc ad te es.

Qui conversus, dixit Petro: Vade post me Satana, scandalum es mihi: quia non sapis ea quæ Dei sunt, sed ea quæ hominum.

Who turning, said to Peter: Go behind me, Satan, thou art a scandal unto me: because thou savourest not the things that are of God, but the things that are of men.

Qui converte, dic ad Petro: vade post me Satana, scandalo es ad me: quia non sape illa que de Deo es, sed illa que de homines.

Tunc Jesus dixit discipulis suis: Si quis vult post me venire, abneget semetipsum, et tollat crucem suam, et sequatur me.

Then Jesus said to his disciples: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Tunc Iesu dic ad discipulos suo: si qui vol post me venire, abnega semetipso, et tolle cruce suo, et seque me.

Qui enim voluerit animam suam salvam facere, perdet eam: qui autem perdiderit animam suam propter me, inveniet eam.

For he that will save his life, shall lose it: and he that shall lose his life for my sake, shall find it.

Qui nam vol anima suo salva facere, perde illa: qui autem perde anima suo propter me, inveni illa.

Quid enim prodest homini, si mundum universum lucretur, animæ vero suæ detrimentum patiatur? aut quam dabit homo commutationem pro anima sua?

For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?

Quid nam prosum ad homine, si mundo universa lucror, de anima vero suo detrimento pate? Aut homine i da quam commutatione pro anima suo?

Filius enim hominis venturus est in gloria Patris sui cum angelis suis: et tunc reddet unicuique secundum opera ejus.

For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels: and then will he render to every man according to his works.

Filio nam de homine veni es in gloria de Patre suo cum angelos suo: et tunc redde et unisque secundo operes de illo.

Amen dico vobis, sunt quidam de hic stantibus, qui non gustabunt mortem, donec videant Filium hominis venientem in regno suo.

Amen I say to you, there are some of them that stand here, that shall not taste death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

Amen dic ad vos, es uno de hoc sta, qui non gusta morte, usque que vide Filio de homine veni in regno suo.
