Evangelium secundum Joannem

Post hæc abiit Jesus trans mare Galilææ, quod est Tiberiadis:

After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is that of Tiberias.

Post hoc Iesu i ab trans mari de Galilaea, quod es de Tiberiade:

et sequebatur eum multitudo magna, quia videbant signa quæ faciebat super his qui infirmabantur.

And a great multitude followed him, because they saw the miracles which he did on them that were diseased.

Et multitudine magna seque illo, quia vide signos que fac super hoc qui infirma.

Subiit ergo in montem Jesus et ibi sedebat cum discipulis suis.

Jesus therefore went up into a mountain: and there he sat with his disciples.

Iesu ergo in monte subi et ibi sede cum discipulos suo.

Erat autem proximum Pascha dies festus Judæorum.

Now the pasch, the festival day of the Jews, was near at hand.

Es autem proximo Pascha die festo de Iudaeos.

Cum sublevasset ergo oculos Jesus, et vidisset quia multitudo maxima venit ad eum, dixit ad Philippum: Unde ememus panes, ut manducent hi?

When Jesus therefore had lifted up his eyes and seen that a very great multitude cometh to him, he said to Philip: Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

Cum Iesu ergo subleva oculos, et vide quia multitudine magna veni ad illo, dic ad Philippo: unde eme panes, ut hoc manduca?

Hoc autem dicebat tentans eum: ipse enim sciebat quid esset facturus.

And this he said to try him: for he himself knew what he would do.

Hoc autem dic tenta illo: ipso nam sci quid es fac.

Respondit ei Philippus: Ducentorum denariorum panes non sufficiunt eis, ut unusquisque modicum quid accipiat.

Philip answered him: Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them that every one may take a little.

Philippo ad illo responde: de ducentis de denarios panes non suffice ad illos, ut et unusquis modico quid accipe.

Dicit ei unus ex discipulis ejus, Andreas, frater Simonis Petri:

One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, saith to him:

Dic ad illo uno ex discipulos de illo, Andrease, fratre de Simone de Petro:

Est puer unus hic qui habet quinque panes hordeaceos et duos pisces: sed hæc quid sunt inter tantos?

There is a boy here that hath five barley loaves and two fishes. But what are these among so many?

Es puero uno hoc qui habe quinque pane hordeaceo et duo pisce: sed hoc quid es inter tantos?

Dixit ergo Jesus: Facite homines discumbere. Erat autem fœnum multum in loco. Discubuerunt ergo viri, numero quasi quinque millia.

Then Jesus said: Make the men sit down. Now, there was much grass in the place. The men therefore sat down, in number about five thousand.

Iesu ergo dic: fac homines discumbe. Es autem foeno multo in loco. Viros ergo discumbe, numero quasi quinque mile.

Accepit ergo Jesus panes: et cum gratias egisset, distribuit discumbentibus: similiter et ex piscibus quantum volebant.

And Jesus took the loaves: and when he had given thanks, he distributed to them that were set down. In like manner also of the fishes, as much as they would.

Iesu ergo accipe panes: et cum gratias age, distribue discumbe: similiter et ex pisces quanto vol.

Ut autem impleti sunt, dixit discipulis suis: Colligite quæ superaverunt fragmenta, ne pereant.

And when they were filled, he said to his disciples: gather up the fragments that remain, lest they be lost.

Ut autem imple es, dic ad discipulos suo: collige que supera fragmentos, ne peri.

Collegerunt ergo, et impleverunt duodecim cophinos fragmentorum ex quinque panibus hordeaceis, quæ superfuerunt his qui manducaverant.

They gathered up therefore and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which remained over and above to them that had eaten.

Collige ergo, et imple duodecime cophinos de fragmentos ex quinque pane hordeaceo, que supersum ad hoc qui manduca.

Illi ergo homines cum vidissent quod Jesus fecerat signum, dicebant: Quia hic est vere propheta, qui venturus est in mundum.

Now those men, when they had seen what a miracle Jesus had done, said: This is of a truth the prophet that is to come into the world.

Illo ergo homines cum vide quod Iesu fac signo, dic: quia hoc es vere propheta, qui veni es in mundo.

Jesus ergo cum cognovisset quia venturi essent ut raperent eum, et facerent eum regem, fugit iterum in montem ipse solus.

Jesus therefore, when he knew that they would come to take him by force and make him king, fled again into the mountains, himself alone.

Iesu ergo cum cognosce quia veni es ut rape illo, et fac illo rege, fuge iterum in monte ipso solo.

Ut autem sero factum est, descenderunt discipuli ejus ad mare.

And when evening was come, his disciples went down to the sea.

Ut autem sere facto es, discipulos de illo descende ad mari.

Et cum ascendissent navim, venerunt trans mare in Capharnaum: et tenebræ jam factæ erant et non venerat ad eos Jesus.

And when they had gone up into a ship, they went over the sea to Capharnaum. And it was now dark: and Jesus was not come unto them.

Et cum ascende navi, veni trans mari in Capharnao: et tenebras jam fac es et non Iesu ad illos veni.

Mare autem, vento magno flante, exsurgebat.

And the sea arose, by reason of a great wind that blew.

Mari autem, vento magna fla, ex(s)urga.

Cum remigassent ergo quasi stadia viginti quinque aut triginta, vident Jesum ambulantem supra mare, et proximum navi fieri, et timuerunt.

When they had rowed therefore about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking upon the sea and drawing nigh to the ship. And they were afraid.

Cum remiga ergo quasi stadios viginti quinque aut triginta, vide Iesu ambula supra mari, et proximo navi fieri, et time.

Ille autem dicit eis: Ego sum, nolite timere.

But he saith to them: It is I. Be not afraid.

Illo autem dic ad illos: me es, ne vol time.

Voluerunt ergo accipere eum in navim et statim navis fuit ad terram, in quam ibant.

They were willing therefore to take him into the ship. And presently the ship was at the land to which they were going.

Vol ergo accipe illo in navi et statim navi es ad terra, in quam i.

Altera die, turba, quæ stabat trans mare, vidit quia navicula alia non erat ibi nisi una, et quia non introisset cum discipulis suis Jesus in navim, sed soli discipuli ejus abiissent:

The next day, the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other ship there but one: and that Jesus had not entered into the ship with his disciples, but that his disciples were gone away alone.

Altero die, turba, que sta trans mari, vide quia navicula alio non es ibi nisi uno, et quia non Iesu cum discipulos suo introi in navi, sed solo discipulos de illo i ab:

aliæ vero supervenerunt naves a Tiberiade juxta locum ubi manducaverant panem, gratias agente Domino.

But other ships came in from Tiberias, nigh unto the place where they had eaten the bread, the Lord giving thanks.

Alio vero superveni navis ab Tiberiade juxta loco ubi manduca pane, gratias age Domino.

Cum ergo vidisset turba quia Jesus non esset ibi, neque discipuli ejus, ascenderunt in naviculas, et venerunt Capharnaum quærentes Jesum.

When therefore the multitude saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they took shipping and came to Capharnaum, seeking for Jesus.

Cum ergo turba vide quia Iesu non es ibi, neque discipulos de illo, ascende in naviculas, et veni Capharnao quaere Iesu.

Et cum invenissent eum trans mare, dixerunt ei: Rabbi, quando huc venisti?

And when they had found him on that other side of the sea, they said to him: Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

Et cum inveni illo trans mari, dic ad illo: rabbi, quando huc veni?

Respondit eis Jesus, et dixit: Amen, amen dico vobis: quæritis me non quia vidistis signa, sed quia manducastis ex panibus et saturati estis.

Jesus answered them and said: Amen, amen, I say to you, you seek me, not because you have seen miracles, but because you did eat of the loaves and were filled.

Iesu ad illos responde, et dic: amen, amen dic ad vos: quaere me non quia vide signos, sed quia manduca ex panes et satura es.

Operamini non cibum, qui perit, sed qui permanet in vitam æternam, quem Filius hominis dabit vobis. Hunc enim Pater signavit Deus.

Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that which endureth unto life everlasting, which the Son of man will give you. For him hath God, the Father, sealed.

Operor non cibo, qui peri, sed qui permane in vita aeterno, Filio de homine i da quem ad vos. Hoc nam Patre signa Deo.

Dixerunt ergo ad eum: Quid faciemus ut operemur opera Dei?

They said therefore unto him: What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?

Dic ergo ad illo: quid fac ut operor operes de Deo?

Respondit Jesus, et dixit eis: Hoc est opus Dei, ut credatis in eum quem misit ille.

Jesus answered and said to them: This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he hath sent.

Iesu responde, et dic ad illos: hoc es opere de Deo, ut crede in illo illo mitte quem.

Dixerunt ergo ei: Quod ergo tu facis signum ut videamus et credamus tibi? quid operaris?

They said therefore to him: What sign therefore dost thou shew that we may see and may believe thee? What dost thou work?

Dic ergo ad illo: quod ergo te fac signo ut vide et crede ad te? Quid operor?

Patres nostri manducaverunt manna in deserto, sicut scriptum est: Panem de cælo dedit eis manducare.

Our fathers did eat manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

Patres nostro manduca manna in deserto, sicut scripto es: pane de caelo da ad illos manduca.

Dixit ergo eis Jesus: Amen, amen dico vobis: non Moyses dedit vobis panem de cælo, sed Pater meus dat vobis panem de cælo verum.

Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen, I say to you; Moses gave you not bread from heaven, but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

Iesu ergo ad illos dic: amen, amen dic ad vos: non Moyse da ad vos pane de caelo, sed Patre meo da ad vos pane de caelo verissimo.

Panis enim Dei est, qui de cælo descendit, et dat vitam mundo.

For the bread of God is that which cometh down from heaven and giveth life to the world.

Pane nam de Deo es, qui de caelo descende, et da vita ad mundo.

Dixerunt ergo ad eum: Domine, semper da nobis panem hunc.

They said therefore unto him: Lord, give us always this bread.

Dic ergo ad illo: domino, semper da ad nos pane hoc.

Dixit autem eis Jesus: Ego sum panis vitæ: qui venit ad me, non esuriet, et qui credit in me, non sitiet umquam.

And Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life. He that cometh to me shall not hunger: and he that believeth in me shall never thirst.

Iesu autem ad illos dic: me es pane de vita: qui veni ad me, non esuri, et qui crede in me, non sitie umquam.

Sed dixi vobis quia et vidistis me, et non creditis.

But I said unto you that you also have seen me, and you believe not.

Sed dic ad vos quia et vide me, et non crede.

Omne quod dat mihi Pater, ad me veniet: et eum qui venit ad me, non ejiciam foras:

All that the Father giveth to me shall come to me: and him that cometh to me, I will not cast out.

Omni Patre da ad me quod, ad me veni: et illo qui veni ad me, non eiicia foras:

quia descendi de cælo, non ut faciam voluntatem meam, sed voluntatem ejus qui misit me.

Because I came down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him that sent me.

Quia descende de caelo, non ut fac voluntate meo, sed voluntate de illo qui mitte me.

Hæc est autem voluntas ejus qui misit me, Patris: ut omne quod dedit mihi, non perdam ex eo, sed resuscitem illud in novissimo die.

Now this is the will of the Father who sent me: that of all that he hath given me, I should lose nothing; but should raise it up again in the last day.

Hoc es autem voluntate de illo qui mitte me, de Patre: ut omni quod da ad me, non perde ex eo, sed resuscita illo in novissimo die.

Hæc est autem voluntas Patris mei, qui misit me: ut omnis qui videt Filium et credit in eum, habeat vitam æternam, et ego resuscitabo eum in novissimo die.

And this is the will of my Father that sent me: that every one who seeth the Son and believeth in him may have life everlasting. And I will raise him up in the last day.

Hoc es autem voluntate de Patre meo, qui mitte me: ut omni qui vide Filio et crede in illo, que habe vita aeterno, et me resuscita illo in novissimo die.

Murmurabant ergo Judæi de illo, quia dixisset: Ego sum panis vivus, qui de cælo descendi,

The Jews therefore murmured at him, because he had said: I am the living bread which came down from heaven.

Iudaeos ergo murmura de illo, quia me: dic es pane vivo, qui de caelo descende,

et dicebant: Nonne hic est Jesus filius Joseph, cujus nos novimus patrem et matrem? quomodo ergo dicit hic: Quia de cælo descendi?

And they said: Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then saith he: I came down from heaven?

Et dic: nonne hoc es Iesu filio Ioseph, de que nos nosce patre et matre? Quomodo ergo hoc dic: quia de caelo descende?

Respondit ergo Jesus, et dixit eis: Nolite murmurare in invicem:

Jesus therefore answered and said to them: Murmur not among yourselves.

Iesu ergo responde, et dic ad illos: ne vol murmura in invicem:

nemo potest venire ad me, nisi Pater, qui misit me, traxerit eum; et ego resuscitabo eum in novissimo die.

No man can come to me, except the Father, who hath sent me, draw him. And I will raise him up in the last day.

Nemo pote venire ad me, nisi Patre, qui mitte me, trahe illo; et me resuscita illo in novissimo die.

Est scriptum in prophetis: Et erunt omnes docibiles Dei. Omnis qui audivit a Patre, et didicit, venit ad me.

It is written in the prophets: And they shall all be taught of God. Every one that hath heard of the Father and hath learned cometh forth me.

Es scripto in prophetas: et es omni docibile de Deo. Omni qui audi ab Patre, et disce, veni ad me.

Non quia Patrem vidit quisquam, nisi is, qui est a Deo, hic vidit Patrem.

Not that any man hath seen the Father: but he who is of God, he hath seen the Father.

Non quia Patre vide ullo, nisi illo, qui es ab Deo, hoc vide Patre.

Amen, amen dico vobis: qui credit in me, habet vitam æternam.

Amen, amen, I say unto you: He that believeth in me hath everlasting life.

Amen, amen dic ad vos: qui crede in me, habe vita aeterno.

Ego sum panis vitæ.

I am the bread of life.

Me es pane de vita.

Patres vestri manducaverunt manna in deserto, et mortui sunt.

Your fathers did eat manna in the desert: and are dead.

Patres vestro manduca manna in deserto, et more es.

Hic est panis de cælo descendens: ut si quis ex ipso manducaverit, non moriatur.

This is the bread which cometh down from heaven: that if any man eat of it, he may not die.

Hoc es pane de caelo descende: ut si qui ex ipso manduca, non more.

Ego sum panis vivus, qui de cælo descendi.

I am the living bread which came down from heaven.

Me es pane vivo, qui de caelo descende.

Si quis manducaverit ex hoc pane, vivet in æternum: et panis quem ego dabo, caro mea est pro mundi vita.

If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.

Si qui manduca ex hoc pane, vive in aeterno: et pane me da quem, carne meo es pro mundo vita.

Litigabant ergo Judæi ad invicem, dicentes: Quomodo potest hic nobis carnem suam dare ad manducandum?

The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying: How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

Iudaeos ergo litiga ad invicem, dicente: quomodo pote hoc ad nos carne suo dare ad manduca?

Dixit ergo eis Jesus: Amen, amen dico vobis: nisi manducaveritis carnem Filii hominis, et biberitis ejus sanguinem, non habebitis vitam in vobis.

Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you: except you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you.

Iesu ergo ad illos dic: amen, amen dic ad vos: nisi manduca carne de Filio de homine, et bibe de illo sanguine, non habe vita in vos.

Qui manducat meam carnem, et bibit meum sanguinem, habet vitam æternam: et ego resuscitabo eum in novissimo die.

He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day.

Qui manduca meo carne, et bibe meo sanguine, habe vita aeterno: et me resuscita illo in novissimo die.

Caro enim mea vere est cibus: et sanguis meus, vere est potus;

For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed.

Carne nam meo vere es cibo: et sanguine meo, vere es potu;

qui manducat meam carnem et bibit meum sanguinem, in me manet, et ego in illo.

He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood abideth in me: and I in him.

Qui manduca meo carne et bibe meo sanguine, in me mane, et me in illo.

Sicut misit me vivens Pater, et ego vivo propter Patrem: et qui manducat me, et ipse vivet propter me.

As the living Father hath sent me and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, the same also shall live by me.

Sicut Patre mitte vivente me, et me vive propter Patre: et qui manduca me, et ipso vive propter me.

Hic est panis qui de cælo descendit. Non sicut manducaverunt patres vestri manna, et mortui sunt. Qui manducat hunc panem, vivet in æternum.

This is the bread that came down from heaven. Not as your fathers did eat manna and are dead. He that eateth this bread shall live for ever.

Hoc es pane qui de caelo descende. Non sicut manduca patres vestro manna, et more es. Qui manduca hoc pane, vive in aeterno.

Hæc dixit in synagoga docens, in Capharnaum.

These things he said, teaching in the synagogue, in Capharnaum.

Hoc dic in synagoga doce, in Capharnao.

Multi ergo audientes ex discipulis ejus, dixerunt: Durus est hic sermo, et quis potest eum audire?

Many therefore of his disciples, hearing it, said: This saying is hard; and who can hear it?

Multo ergo audi ex discipulos de illo, dic: duro es hoc sermone, et qui pote illo audire?

Sciens autem Jesus apud semetipsum quia murmurarent de hoc discipuli ejus, dixit eis: Hoc vos scandalizat?

But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said to them: Doth this scandalize you?

Sciente autem Iesu apud semetipso quia discipulos de hoc de illo murmura, dic ad illos: vos scandaliza hoc?

si ergo videritis Filium hominis ascendentem ubi erat prius?

If then you shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?

Si ergo vide Filio de homine ascende ubi es ante?

Spiritus est qui vivificat: caro non prodest quidquam: verba quæ ego locutus sum vobis, spiritus et vita sunt.

It is the spirit that quickeneth: the flesh profiteth nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

Spiritu es qui vivifica: carne non prosum ullo: verbos que me locuto es ad vos, spiritu et vita es.

Sed sunt quidam ex vobis qui non credunt. Sciebat enim ab initio Jesus qui essent non credentes, et quis traditurus esset eum.

But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that did not believe and who he was that would betray him.

Sed es uno ex vos qui non crede. Sci nam ab initio Iesu qui es non crede, et qui trade es illo.

Et dicebat: Propterea dixi vobis, quia nemo potest venire ad me, nisi fuerit ei datum a Patre meo.

And he said: Therefore did I say to you that no man can come to me, unless it be given him by my Father.

Et dic: propter hoc dic ad vos, quia nemo pote venire ad me, nisi es ad illo dato ab Patre meo.

Ex hoc multi discipulorum ejus abierunt retro: et jam non cum illo ambulabant.

After this, many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him.

Ex hoc multo de discipulos de illo i ab retro: et jam non cum illo ambula.

Dixit ergo Jesus ad duodecim: Numquid et vos vultis abire?

Then Jesus said to the twelve: Will you also go away?

Iesu ergo dic ad duodecime: numquid et vos vol i ab?

Respondit ergo ei Simon Petrus: Domine, ad quem ibimus? verba vitæ æternæ habes:

And Simon Peter answered him: Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.

Responde ergo ad illo Simone Petro: domino, ad quem i? Verbos de vita aeterno habe:

et nos credidimus, et cognovimus quia tu es Christus Filius Dei.

And we have believed and have known that thou art the Christ, the Son of God.

Et nos crede, et cognosce quia te es Christo Filio de Deo.

Respondit eis Jesus: Nonne ego vos duodecim elegi: et ex vobis unus diabolus est?

Jesus answered them: Have not I chosen you twelve? And one of you is a devil.

Iesu ad illos responde: nonne me elige vos duodecime: et ex vos uno diabolo es?

Dicebat autem Judam Simonis Iscariotem: hic enim erat traditurus eum, cum esset unus ex duodecim.

Now he meant Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon: for this same was about to betray him, whereas he was one of the twelve.

Dic autem Iudase de Simone Iscariose: hoc nam es trade illo, cum es uno ex duodecime.
